The Winner in the Monster Box contest at 2cooltek.com, October 2003.

  • Andrew Hodges, a.k.a. DesignedForHell
  • Igor Vulfson, a.k.a. codeflux

Created during October 13 through October 18, 2003. Budget - under $100. Everything is documented and provable - we have saved the original dated images straight from the digital camera (Canon S200). Our receipts for allen head screws and rivets ($24.38, or which we actually used only about $15 worth) and diamond plate aluminum ($43.70) are on file. We also used about $15 worth of 5mm acrylic and $10 worth of angle aluminum.

The Victim: ancient Gateway G6-300 case that hosted a state of the art Pentium II system running at a nose-bleed-inducing 300MHz.

The Idea: strip it down, flip it upside down, plate it with diamond-plate aluminum, use lots of allen head screws.

The Effect: power supply is on the bottom, so are the optical drives; the window is on the right side, not the left; everything is backwards, just as dyslexics like it. As a side-effect, you can now easily see the window in the optical drives, power supply, and you can see the fan spinning on the videocard. The case will be designed as a showcase for any mods we can think of.

Tools:

  • Dewalt Sidegrinder (soon to be dead)
  • Ryobi Dremel - low speed
  • Black and Decker Dremel - high speed
  • Jig saw
  • Drill
  • Rivet gun
  • Screwdrivers, hammers, hole taps, soldering stuff, etc.

$100 dollars. 6 days. 1 computer. 1 set of tools.
